A follow-on update to our recent report on the Mobilio’s origins (and celebrity): the 2017 refresh of the popular mini MPV was launched this week in a surprise move by Honda Cars Philippines. The new Mobilio brandishes the much anticipated front-end redesign, updating her to the Solid Wing theme, Honda’s trademark look that’s already sported by most of their other models, particularly last year’s all-new BR-V.
The Mobilio’s much publicized SUV evolution, the BR-V was introduced globally in January 2016 and brought here just eight months later for its debut at the 6th Philippine International Motor Show. That in itself, the short eight month wait, suggests the spin-off SUV hit the ground running and dove straight into ready market demand. The BR-V’s contours easily mark it as a Mobilio derivative, except for the fascia which put an edgier, more square-jawed expression on the sport utility. The BR-V looks, rather handsomely, like its bigger-boned CR-V sibling. And the result, apparently, has been a strong push to give the same treatment to what started it all: the Mobilio, the mother MPV. Consequently, after the Mobilio update was introduced globally into its maiden Thailand market last January (one year after the BR-V’s global intro), she arrives here a mere six months later (and beating the BR-V’s record-setting eight months).
The new Mobilio brings a slight price bump, raising the floor on its price range by P7k with an SRP of P829k for its base E MT variant, and putting its top-spec RS variant (with upscale appointments first introduced in the BR-V) over the million mark at P1,029k. Nevertheless, this stretched out price range sits well in Honda’s structure, putting the Mobilio, and the BR-V, in this economy niche for sensible seven-seaters. What Honda now delivers are MPV – SUV twins for growth markets where, as we phrased it in our recent Mobilio report, those five economy seats in base model sedans and hatchbacks won’t stop new owners from doing the math and instead choosing the greater capacities of these crossed-over people-movers.
